Objectives
  • To evaluate 10 cases of pedagoical integration of mobile technology into formal subject learning across differernt disciplines.
  • To examine mobile technology-supported pedagogical practices that are potential to enhance quality of learning and teaching in school education.
Methods Used
  • A pre-test and post-test before and after the teaching period in each case: Investigating whether the mobile technology-supported pedagogical practices could promote students to enhance learning achievements
  • A semi-structured questionnaire survey after the teaching period in each case: Investigating how students perceived the learning experience under the mobile technology-supported pedagogical practices
  • Semi-structured interviews with teachers and students after the teaching period in each case: Triangulating the data collected from the questionnaire surveys
  • A classroom observation (with videotaping of all teaching sessions) plus an analysis of time-on-task allocation (i.e. the actual time for students engaging in class learning tasks) during the teaching sessions in each case: Investigating the class activities and pedagogical designs under the mobile technology-supported pedagogical practices
Summary of Findings
  • The mobile technology-supported pedagogical practices in general supported students to achieve significant increase in their learning achievements in the target learning topics.
  • The mobile technology-supported pedagogical practices in general encouraged students to actively participate in the learning process and to interact with their peers and teachers.
  • The students and teachers were generally interested in and satisfied with the learning and teaching with the pedagogical integration of mobile technology.
  • Time-on-task analysis of 1756 minutes of class activities in the 10 cases found that the mobile technology-supported pedagogical practices promoted student-centered learning.
Impact
  • To reveal the pedagogical potential of mobile learning strategies on enhancing formal subject learning across differernt disciplines.
  • To reveal mobile technology-supported pedagogical practices that are conducive to student-centered learning in school education.

Biography of Principal Investigator
Prof. KONG Siu Cheung currently is Professor and Head of Department of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT); and Director of Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC), the Hong Kong Institute of Education. Prof. Kong holds a doctorate from the Department of Computer Science of the City University of Hong Kong. Prof. Kong has published 18 books/proceedings, 17 refereed book chapters, 38 refereed journal articles, 64 refereed conference papers and 15 Education Bureau reports. He has completed/conducted over 50 research projects with funding support of more than HK$12,000,000 since joining the Institute. Prof. Kong is at present serving as the President of the Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education (APSCE). He currently is also serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Research and Practice in Technology Enhanced Learning (RPTEL) and Journal of Computers in Education (JCE). Prof. Kong is also the Convener of Theory and Practice of Pedagogical Design for Learning in Digital Classrooms International Research Network (IRN) under World Educational Research Association (WERA). Prof. Kong served as a member of the Steering Committee on the Strategic Development of Information Technology in Education that was set up by the Education Bureau of the HKSAR for six years from 2003 to 2009. He is now member of the Assessment and Monitoring Sub-committee of the Quality Education Fund (QEF) of the HKSAR.
